Japan and Uzbekistan continue to strengthen economic and investment cooperation, with particular attention to energy, digital transformation and sustainable development.
On 3 May, during a meeting with President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Japan’s Minister of Finance Satsuki Katayama noted Japan’s interest in diversifying supplies of energy and mineral resources, including oil, gas and strategic minerals from Uzbekistan.
In addition to resource cooperation, the parties discussed developing areas related to the digital transformation of the financial sector and the introduction of modern technologies. In particular, Japan expressed its readiness to support the introduction of artificial intelligence into the treasury system, the development of electronic payment instruments and the use of stablecoins.
Particular attention was paid to the implementation of joint projects in:
-
green energy;
-
IT and digital infrastructure;
-
healthcare;
-
transport infrastructure;
-
the agricultural sector.
Plans were also announced to open a joint financial education center in Tashkent.
Developing cooperation with Japan is of particular interest to Uzbekistan in the context of sustainable development and attracting international investment. For the country, this means not only expanding economic ties but also potentially accelerating the introduction of modern ESG approaches, energy-efficient technologies and sustainable-finance mechanisms.
In recent years, international financial institutions and foreign investors have increasingly assessed projects through the lens of climate resilience, energy efficiency and transparent corporate governance. In this context, developing the partnership with Japan could become an additional driver for projects involving green energy, sustainable finance and the technological modernization of Uzbekistan’s economy.
