In 2024, the HPBS Center for Research and Environmental Engineering made a significant contribution to the development of sustainable construction in Central Asia by successfully implementing projects aligned with the global Sustainable Development Goals agenda. This year, together with global and local partners, our team introduced advanced technologies and promoted energy-efficient solutions that support the region’s development and respond to global challenges.
As 2024 draws to a close, we would like to highlight the key achievements that made this year special for us.
Achievements in EDGE certification
NUR Residential Complex
NUR Residential Complex became the first project in Uzbekistan to receive preliminary EDGE certification at the design stage. 20 residential blocks, representing more than 800 apartments, achieved the EDGE Advanced level. This is a significant accomplishment confirming the project’s high energy-efficiency and sustainability standards.
Uzpromstroybank
We began certifying the portfolio of properties belonging to one of Uzbekistan’s largest banks, Uzpromstroybank. The HPBS team and our SQB colleagues carried out extensive work:
-
40 branches across the country, from Karakalpakstan to the Fergana Valley, were surveyed.
-
The audit of 10 branches was successfully completed, and confirmation from the certification body is expected.
-
Certificates were obtained for 4 branches.
In addition, SQB Bank began accounting for greenhouse gas emissions. Our team performed Scope 1 and Scope 2 calculations for SQB, concluding the year with a complete emissions inventory. Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions calculations are also planned for the future. We are confident that this will provide a foundation for Uzpromstroybank’s further management and reduction of its carbon footprint.
Korzinka
The logistics center of Uzbekistan’s largest retailer, Korzinka, will receive preliminary EDGE Advanced certification at the design stage. This project will confirm that innovative technologies can be applied to create energy-efficient logistics facilities and can truly be regarded as a flagship logistics project.
Climate projects
Tajik Aluminum Plant
An inventory and product carbon-footprint calculation for the Aluminum category were conducted in preparation for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
Project with the Ministry of Ecology of Uzbekistan
A partnership agreement was signed with the Ministry of Ecology of Uzbekistan. Together, we worked to develop the climate strategy of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Training and market development
This year, HPBS and IFC devoted particular attention to developing green building and training in Uzbekistan. Training qualified professionals and raising stakeholder awareness became key elements in advancing energy-efficiency standards and implementing sustainable projects. These efforts contribute to the development of a green economy in Central Asia.
Together with our partners at Sintali, we trained 26 experts in Mongolia, preparing them for EDGE certification.
In Uzbekistan, we actively trained both industry professionals and the broader public. 35 people successfully completed the EDGE training program, and 5 of them passed the exam and received EDGE Expert status.
We also delivered a series of lectures to more than 150 participants, including representatives of development companies, the banking sector, the construction industry, and other industries.
These activities laid a solid foundation for further implementation of green building principles in the region. We plan to continue training next year.
HPBS team accreditation
We are developing not only the market but also our team. We are proud of our employees’ professional growth this year:
-
6 employees completed international accreditation and became green building experts holding the international EDGE Expert qualification.
-
2 employees successfully completed training and became accredited EDGE auditors.
Results and outlook
This year brought fundamental changes and opened new horizons for HPBS. We intend to continue moving forward and strengthen our position in sustainable construction in Central Asia. Our plans are closely connected with Uzbekistan’s national objectives for the new year, which the President declared the Year of Environmental Protection and the Green Economy.
Next year, we intend to:
-
Increase the number of certified properties and trained professionals.
-
Actively promote environmental standards in the market and continue training professionals.
-
Expand partnerships with leading companies in the region.
Our team believes that joint efforts will create a solid foundation for an environmentally sustainable future for Uzbekistan. We thank all our partners and employees for their contribution to our common cause. Happy New Year! We wish you inspiration, success, and good health. May our joint work bring prosperity and a sustainable future!
