Digitalizing Decarbonization and Building Corporate MRV Systems

HPBS develops and implements comprehensive digital Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems that enable companies to measure their carbon footprint, control greenhouse gas emissions, manage decarbonization processes and substantiate the results of their climate action.

We combine the international methodologies of the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064, PCAF and CBAM, as well as IFRS S2 requirements, with digital technologies, automation of corporate processes, IoT infrastructure and intelligent data analytics tools.

The objective is to transform fragmented business data into a unified digital decision-making system that delivers transparency of climate metrics, risk management, greater efficiency and investment attractiveness for the company.

What the MRV service includes:

1. Business process diagnostics and automation of data collection

We conduct a comprehensive assessment of the company’s existing data management system, identify information sources and responsible parties, and determine how climate monitoring can be integrated into operational processes.

Scope of work:

  • Analysis of current business processes, information systems and corporate reporting.
  • Inventory of data sources on energy consumption, fuel, technological processes, transport, materials, waste, procurement and supply chains.
  • Assessment of the quality, completeness, reliability and availability of source information.
  • Identification of data gaps, duplicated operations and weaknesses in internal control.
  • Assignment of departmental responsibility for generating, providing and approving indicators.
  • Design of an architecture for automated collection and transfer of information from corporate ERP, CRM, accounting and production systems and digital registries.
  • Definition of technical requirements for integrations, data exchange and data quality control.

Deliverable: a digital map of data sources and business processes, an integration architecture and a roadmap for automating corporate climate accounting.

2. Development of a corporate MRV methodology and climate accounting

We build the methodological and organizational foundation of the monitoring, reporting and verification system, taking into account industry specifics, international standards, corporate goals and applicable government requirements.

Scope of work:

  • Definition of organizational and operational boundaries for greenhouse gas accounting.
  • Selection of calculation methods and a system of climate indicators.
  • Identification of material emission sources and Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 categories.
  • Establishment of the base-year structure and baseline recalculation rules.
  • Setting the frequency of data collection, calculations and reporting.
  • Allocation of responsibilities among company departments.
  • Development of procedures for approval, internal control and confirmation of information.
  • Establishment of requirements for data quality, the evidence base, storage of source documents and change history.
  • Development of unified templates and digital data collection forms with subsequent automated integration.
  • Preparation of an MRV system operating manual, internal regulations and procedures.
  • Definition of requirements for monitoring dashboards, user roles and access levels.
  • Training of staff and responsible departments to work with the corporate MRV system.

Deliverable: a corporate MRV methodology, internal regulations, a responsibility matrix, digital data collection forms and technical specifications for the system.

3. Automated calculation of the carbon footprint and emissions baseline

We develop digital calculation models that provide systematic assessment of greenhouse gas emissions in line with international methodologies.

Main areas of calculation:

  • Scope 1 — direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company.
  • Scope 2 — indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, steam and cooling.
  • Scope 3 — indirect emissions across value chains, including suppliers, logistics, use of products and other material categories.
  • PCAF — emissions associated with the lending and investment portfolios of financial institutions.
  • CBAM — calculation of embedded emissions of products and preparation of data for the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
  • ISO 14064 — organizational-level emissions accounting, assessment of climate projects and preparation for verification.

The system establishes the baseline, calculates the carbon footprint by facility, department, enterprise and group of companies, and compares indicators across reporting periods. It also supports analysis of specific emissions per unit of output, revenue, production activity and other industry metrics.

Deliverable: a digital model of the business’s carbon footprint that allows regular recalculation, trend analysis and assessment of decarbonization results across different periods.

System capabilities:

  • Connection of international, national and industry sources of emission factors.
  • Application of factors by country, energy type, fuel, technology and reporting period.
  • Automated updating of factors from available sources.
  • Control of versions, validity dates and sources of factors.
  • Retention of the history of applied factors to ensure reproducibility of calculations.
  • Configuration of rules for approving new factors and recalculating indicators.

Deliverable: a managed database of calculation factors with mechanisms for updating, documentation and change control.

Our technology foundation — 7G Carbon Platform

In delivering digital solutions, HPBS is developing its own technology ecosystem, 7G Carbon Platform, focused on greenhouse gas emissions calculation, climate indicator monitoring and the digitalization of decarbonization processes. The platform architecture provides for the development of specialized GHG, PCAF, CBAM and MRV modules, integrations with corporate systems, digital registries, analytics and reporting tools. Implementation can be phased — from a corporate methodology and automated emissions calculation to a comprehensive MRV system with IoT, independent verification and management analytics.

Digitalizing decarbonization — a tool for managing sustainable business development

A corporate MRV system is more than a climate reporting tool. It is digital infrastructure that links environmental indicators with production, financial, investment and management decisions.

HPBS helps companies move from periodic carbon footprint calculation to systematic decarbonization management, in which every indicator has a source, a calculation method, a responsible owner, a control procedure and practical value for the business.
