At the United Nations Climate Conference COP29 in Baku, a ceremonial event was held to award the "green" certificate to the Uzbek Industrial and Construction Bank (SQB) for its second certified project in Tashkent. The EDGE certificate from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) was presented by Anna Zavaleeva, HPBS Director for Central Asia, and Bobir Sultonmurodov, Director of the Green Banking Department at SQB, with the participation of Obidjon Nematovich Kudratov, First Deputy Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The event took place at the Uzbekistan Pavilion.
HPBS’s Role in the Project
Certifying existing buildings is a complex process that requires a detailed approach and a high level of expertise. During our work on this project, we gained numerous insights:
- Detailed Building Audits: The success of certification begins with a thorough analysis of the current state of buildings. Our team traveled across Uzbekistan, from Karakalpakstan to the Fergana Valley, to personally inspect 39 SQB branches. This provided valuable insights, and we are grateful to SQB staff for their warm hospitality and collaboration.
- Accuracy Through Measurements: For older buildings, precise measurements of structures, window dimensions, and plumbing systems are critical. This data ensures that the EDGE model aligns with the actual characteristics of the buildings.
- Energy Data – A Key to Success: Energy consumption records significantly simplify certification and highlight the importance of installing meters and monitoring energy usage. This practice benefits not only certification but also operational efficiency.
- Documenting Every Detail: Accounting for all energy-consuming devices, from split systems to lighting fixtures, including their capacity and efficiency, ensures accurate EDGE model calibration and eliminates discrepancies during the review process.
- The Role of Expertise: Our accredited EDGE experts bring a deep understanding of the certification system. This enables us to find innovative solutions tailored to each building's unique conditions and work effectively with auditors and certifiers.
The Labzak branch of Uzpromstroybank in Tashkent achieved outstanding results:
- 29% energy savings, achieved through insulated walls, roofs, the use of renewable energy, and optimized glazing.
- 26% water savings, accomplished by installing water-efficient fixtures.
- 100% reduction in embodied carbon in materials, realized by reusing existing construction materials, such as floor slabs, walls, and window frames.
Our team is proud of its contribution to sustainable development and how certification helps create more environmentally friendly and efficient buildings. We sincerely wish Uzpromstroybank continued success in certifying its projects!
